This residential seminar for men is time set aside for widening horizons and deepening one’s Christian understanding of life and the world. Through the talks and opportunities for engaging with others, the seminar should be stimulating and informative, in a friendly and informal atmosphere.
Book Now“We must restore hope to young people, help the old, be open to the future, spread love. Be poor among the poor. We need to include the excluded and preach peace.” - Pope Francis
“Wokeism” is a term commonly applied to the social movement battling perceived institutional injustices perpetrated on social minorities on account of their race, gender, class, or sexuality. But Wokeism cannot be understood or critiqued without an understanding of its philosophical roots.
In this series we will look at how the central tenets of Wokeism – its understanding of the human person, of freedom, and of political society – have been moulded by the great intellectual movements of the 20th Century: existentialism, neo-Marxism and postmodernism in particular. We will begin by examining two great 19th century “masters of suspicion” Karl Marx and Friedrich Nietzsche, and showing how their ideas influenced the principal German and French thinkers of the 20th century: existentialists such as Martin Heidegger and Jean-Paul Sartre, neo-Marxists such as Herbert Marcuse, and postmodernists such as Michel Foucault. We will trace how the principal ideas of these thinkers developed over the past half century to form the foundational principles underlying the Woke worldview.
Fr Gavan Jennings received degrees in philosophy from University College Dublin and the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross, Rome. He is a chaplain in Ely University Centre and editor of the Position Papers book reviews.
The full price of the seminar is €225 which includes meals and accommodation.
